Separating voice, guest, and business traffic with VLANs

VLANs help separate devices by purpose without requiring a completely separate physical network for every group.

Business devices

Staff computers and trusted business systems typically belong on a controlled internal network with access to approved services.

Voice devices

Phones can use a dedicated voice VLAN for clearer policy control, troubleshooting, and quality-of-service planning. Computers connected through compatible phones can still use the business VLAN.

Guest access

Guest wireless traffic should normally be isolated from internal systems and restricted to internet access.

Keep the design supportable

Segmentation is valuable, but complexity should match the organization’s ability to manage it. Clear port profiles, diagrams, and naming standards are essential.
